Program, Target Audience and Synopsis

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a FREE 8 hour training designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, athletic trainers, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders. Identify common mental health challenges for youth including anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders, and eating disorders.

Course Objectives

  • Create a 5-step action plan for those in crisis to connect with an appropriate professional
  • Recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems including depression, anxiety / trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders and self-injury
  • Interpret prevalence of mental health disorders in the US and the need for reduced negative attitudes in their communities

The Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program (BOC AP# P3634) is approved by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible for a maximum of 8 Category A hours / CEUs.  ATs should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CE activity.
