Since incorporating, JSMP has formalized its arrangement with the Duval County Public Schools and has received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Services. JSMP coordinates the following services to high school athletes in Duval County:
Pre-participation Athlete Screenings
JSMP coordinates free pre-participation athletic screenings for student athletes in Duval County. JSMP provides this service in conjunction with the Duval County Medical Society through which various physicians donate their time. The facilities and resources for these screenings are donated by the other sponsors of JSMP. We are proud to offer an extensive physical examination to the student athletes: these physicals include participation from internal medicine physicians, Pediatricians, orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists (including EKG and Echo exams when indicated), pulmonologists who perform asthma screening, vision screenings and nutritional assessments.
We are providing a service that these children, most of which are from homes with limited means, would not be able to receive otherwise.
Sporting Event Coverage
JSMP arranges on-site medical services for athletes during high school sporting events. These services include assistance for injured athletes, injury evaluation and medical attention for the injured athlete.
Education Programs
JSMP organizes and sponsors sports medicine educational programs which are available to the public. Such programs are conducted using classrooms, audio-visual equipment, seating and other resources made available by sponsors of JSMP.
Medical Clinics
JSMP supports medical clinics for use by injured student athletes regardless of ability to pay.
These services are actively coordinated by JSMP. Consistent with this arrangement, JSMP organized approximately 1,200 pre-participation athletic screenings during the 2006 school year, and coordinated sports medicine services for senior high school athletes in Duval County, regardless of ability to pay. JSMP also coordinated on-site physician during select senior high school football games.
The value of these and other gratuitous services to the Duval County Public Schools coordinated by JSMP during the 2006-2007 school year will be approximately $335,000.
Our Future
JSMP is at an exciting, yet critical juncture. The program has an established agenda and has achieved some of its basic goals. Bob Sefcik, our new Sports Medicine Director, has been recruited with the goal of reorganizing and further expanding our sports medicine services. Bob Sefcik took over the program in Jacksonville in late July 2006. Bob’s experience coupled with his extraordinary commitment and passion to develop this program brings the expertise and drive needed to continue the further development JSMP for Jacksonville’s children by overcoming the obstacles of access and affordability.
